Tales from the Playground

Marisol is upset. Someone at the playground doesn’t want to play with her because of how she looks and speaks. In Tales from the Playground: Marisol’s Playground Problem, Marisol’s friends stand up for her and help her understand that her differences are what make her special!

Extend the Learning

Make a resolution wheel with your child to help figure out strategies to use when a problem arises. Take a paper plate or cardboard circle and make an X in the center of it to divide it into 4 sections. In each section, write (and encourage your child to illustrate) the words “share,” “take turns,” “guess a number,” and “pick an object.” Then, fasten the paper arrow onto the center of the plate with a paper fastener. When your child encounters a problem, have them spin the resolution wheel to find a strategy to try out.

The next time you have a problem, try to come up with a solution together using only your body language to communicate. When someone doesn’t want to play with Marisol, her friends stand up for her. They all make pictures to hang at the playground, making it clear that it’s a space where everyone plays together. Encourage your child to make a similar picture to hang in your local park or playground. As you create it together, talk about the episode. Ask them what differences make Marisol special. How is your child different from Marisol? How is your child the same or similar?
